Antioxidants: The 4 Best Products to Crack the Youth Code

By Cheyann Boyer

Everyone knows we are supposed to eat antioxidant-rich foods like berries, green tea and even dark chocolate. Though most of us don’t know why or what antioxidants actually are.

Oxford Dictionary defines an antioxidant as “a substance that inhibits oxidation, especially one used to counteract the deterioration of stored food products.” The best example of oxidation is an apple. When you first cut an apple the center is white and juicy. After an hour that surface has turned brown, after a day it has lost the juiciness that was there when you first cut into it. That’s oxidation, and it’s what happens in our bodies and skin every day.

Our bodies are exposed to free radicals such as environmental pollutants, smoke, alcohol, processed foods and pesticides. These things enter our system by being ingested, breathed in or absorbed through our skin and immediately go to work stealing electrons from healthy cells and wreaking havoc on our body. Ultimately these toxins are working to rapidly age us. Luckily for us though, antioxidants are there like mini superheroes reducing these free radicals by giving them the extra electron they are searching for, thus neutralizing their damage. YAY, ANTIOXIDANTS!

Now that you know what they do in the body, let’s talk about what they do in our skin. We all want our skin to appear youthful far into our 40’s, right? Well, while ingesting antioxidants through the digestive system can help the damage being done in the skin (damage such as wrinkles, loss of firmness, sun spots and uneven tone), absorbing them with the use of serums and creams offers the best protection from and reversal of oxidative damage. The best part is that this reversal can be seen in just a few weeks! Below are a few of my favorite antioxidants. I regularly use these products to make significant changes for my clients, shaving years off of their appearance.

SkinCeuticals® Phloretin CF (for normal to oily skin types) – The counterpart to C E Ferulic provides the same superior standard for antioxidant protection in skin types that are prone to oiliness or even acne.
